Module 1: The First Steps of Reading-Phonemic Awareness
The first steps of learning how to read is being able to identify letters and
sounds. Students must be efficient identifying letter and sound correspondence
before being able to read words. In this module, you will identify the main
components of phonemic awareness and the benefits it gives students to become
strong, efficient readers.
Topics:
1.1 Why is Phonemic Awareness Important?
1.2 Strategies to Implement Phonemic Awareness
1.2.1 Phonemic Awareness Activities
1.3 Different Ways to Assess Phonemic Awareness
Module 2: Building a Reader-Phonics and Decoding
When students are efficient in letter-sound correspondence, they
are beginning to read words. However, all words are different and contain
different types of spelling patterns which may change the way words are
pronounced. That is why phonics is the second reading component when building
strong readers.
Topics:
2.1 What is Phonics and the Role it Plays in Reading?
2.2 Effective Phonics Instruction and Integration
2.3 Strategies and Activities to Enhance Phonics Instruction
