Module 2.0:
Building a Reader:
Phonics and decoding
With the help and support of phonemic awareness, students will begin to use letter-sound correspondence to read words accurately. But wait a minute! What about words that have different sound spelling patterns and digraphs? What do students do then? That is why phonics instruction is the next reading component in building a strong reading foundation for young learners.
Phonics is the next important step when building a strong reading foundation. Phonics is a controversial reading component for many educators, but research has shown, when taught correctly, students show great gains in learning how to read. Throughout this module, you will read and identify the meaning of phonics and its important role in reading, learn how to integrate phonics into reading instruction, and determine effective strategies and activities to implement phonics instruction.
