Course Goals
The following course goals articulate the general objectives and purpose of this course. Students will:
- identify the 5 main components of reading including, phonemic awareness, phonics,
fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension
- comprehend the vital role that each component represents when developing a strong
reading foundation
- apply strategies and techniques to effectively implement each reading component
- identify areas of weakness through assessments that may enhance reading abilities
Course Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able to:
- identify the importance of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and
comprehension when building a strong reading foundation
- analyze strategies and teaching techniques to enhance the five reading components
-assess students to identify their weaknesses and strengths
-prepare lessons and strategies to reinforce instruction for struggling students
- identify the main characteristics and components of effective reading instruction
- identify ways to integrate phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and
comprehension into reading
-determine appropriate strategies and techniques to effectively teach reading

- compose an example of an effective reading lesson
