Topic 1.3: Different Ways to Assess Phonemic Awareness
Assessments are important when teaching any subject area. Teachers assess to determine individual children’s developmental status at a given time, as well as their progress in a particular area. The term status refers to “where children are” in their development. When teachers assess their students, they are monitoring children’s learning, identifying children who may benefit from interventions and/or special reading programs, as well as guiding classroom planning and instruction.
Since phonemic awareness is the first component in building a strong reading foundation, it is pertinent that teachers assess students before, during, and after instruction to keep records of students’ growth. There are many different phonemic awareness assessments that teachers can provide their young readers to determine
